Greetings, Shredderz! Hope your weekend has started off in style. As always, see below for some selections from the wonderful world of social media.
Allan Byrne, the force behind Byrning Spears, tragically passed away a few years ago as the result of a motorcycle accident in Bali. His legacy as the world’s pre-eminent shaper of channel bottom boards remains, though, as shown in this Instagram post by Andrew Kidman. The board in the post is an absolute beast, measuring at 10’4″ and designed to tame Pipeline. The surfer is underground Aussie charger Sam Yoon, who was written up in a nice Surfer profile that can be found here.
Greg Liddle is one of the world’s pre-eminent shapers of hulls. His shapes can be found at Mollusk, but never for very long, as they tend to get snapped up by his devoted fans. I love seeing examples of Greg’s older boards, and pictured above is a classic Liddle hull that has been taken through its paces. As a bonus, Red Dot Goods is selling a Liddle t-shirt with a very groovy rainbow logo. It’s not cheap at $95, but it is extremely cool.
The picture above is a very cool piece of surfing history that details the evolution of the Bonzer on both sides of the Pacific. Mike Eaton apparently wrote a letter to Peter “PT” Townend with instructions on how the Bonzer design worked. PT took the design and ran with it, shaping a board that later took him to a contest win against Michael Peterson. It’s so cool to be able to track the spread of these designs and their various permutations.
And while we’re on the subject of PT, this post from his Facebook page was too good not to share! This picture seems like it has been ripped straight out of “Boogie Nights.” And is there a more classic name for a crew than The Bronzed Aussies? The answer, if you were wondering, is an emphatic no.
