Greetings, Shredderz! For today’s Sagas of Shred entry we have an ad featuring the late, great legendary Hawaiian hellman Brock Little.
I love the simplicity of this ad, which ran in the May 1991 issue of Surfing Magazine (Vol 27, No 5). It’s an ad for Hawaiian Island Creations.
All it features is one of the best big wave riders of his generation and an 11’6″ rhino chaser that’ll put some hair on your chest. (And lest you get the wrong idea, I would never even dream of riding the kind of waves that board was designed to surf.)
If you look closely on the ad, the board was shaped by Gabe Garduque. I’ve seen Garduque’s name here and there, but I sadly don’t know much about him. I was able to find an interview with Matt Kinoshita of Kazuma Surfboards fame, where Kazuma talks about growing up surfing Garduque’s boards. Then again, if Garduque was making Brock Little’s equipment for Waimea Bay, that’s all I need to know about his resume.
Here’s another example of a rad Garduque / HIC board shaped for Brock Little, which Luis Real shared to his Instagram.
Thanks for reading and we’ll be back next Thursday evening with more vintage surf ads as part of the Sagas of Shred series.
