Flotsam and Jetsam: Chris Ward, Mason Ho and More

Peter Harris Stubbies

Greetings, Shredderz! We’ve got another installment of our Clipz series, showcasing some favorite edits. Without any further ado, here are some videos for your viewing pleasure:

Chris Ward from 5’5″ x 19 1/4″ Redux

Here’s some insane mid-2000s footage of Chris Ward on a MR 1980 Retro Twin model. I don’t know shit about high performance surfing, but Matt Biolos certainly does, and he originally posted this excerpt from 5’5″ x 19 1/4″ Redux on his Instagram. (Beachgrit has also posted the entire movie on YouTube here.) Wardo’s surfing talent might as well be alien technology.

Mason Ho & Timmy Patterson Single Fin

Yeah, I know, I don’t get any points for originality, as the vast majority of these Clipz entries contain clips from Mason and/or his shaper Matt Biolos. Well, I’ll stop posting them as soon as Mase’s quality starts to slip, but until then I’m riding the hot hand. This time Mason can be seen navigating some late season North Shore tubes on sweet Timmy Patterson single fin. It’s great to compare the lines he draws on the single fin versus his standard thruster.

Kelly Slater on a Five Fin Greg Webber Creation

For all my fondness for hand-shaped boards and the craftsmanship involved, I still admire Firewire and their commitment to trying new construction methods and technologies. There, I said it. And even if we disagree on that point, there’s one truth that every surfer acknowledges: Kelly Slater’s status as the GOAT. Here Kelly can be seen surfing an out-there Greg Webber design. And if you like videos of all-time greats surfing funky Webber shapes, here’s one of Tom Curren demolishing some lips on a Webber banana board.

1980 Stubbies Highlights

I was sent this clip by a reader on Instagram; not sure who so if this was you please let me know! Local Burleigh surfer Peter Harris won the 1980 Stubbies contest when he was a 22 year old wild card who was working as a mail sorter at the time. Harris improbably took out Hawaiian Dane Kealoha in the final on his way to a legendary upset victory. There’s some great footage here of Shaun Tomson, Mark Richards, Kealoha and of course Harris. If you’re wondering why they’re not wearing jerseys…well, that’s because the competitors can be identified by their different colored Stubbies trunks! Not sure what Harris is surfing but his board is incredible. Wish more pros surfed creations like this in contests nowadays.
