Greetings, Shredderz! Today’s post is short but sweet. All we have for you are some pics of a gorgeous, modern Steve Lis fish. Lis is widely created with creating the famous design, which is as popular as ever today. According to the Encyclopedia of Surfing, the Steve Lis fish dates back to 1967. Lis, alongside a crew of fellow San Diego kneeboarders, including Rex Huffman, Larry Gephart and Stanley Pleskunas, helped popularize the design over the coming years. I believe Lis still shapes in Kauai. I have also heard it’s not very easy to get in touch with him, much less order one of his famous shapes.
The Steve Lis fish pictured here was sent to me by a collector in New York City. The board was a custom order. The owner tells me that Lis’ wait list is three years long (!!!). He was lucky enough to pick up the board directly from Lis in Kauai.
The Steve Lis fish featured here measures in at 5’9″ x 22 1/2″ x 2 7/8″ (not 100% sure on the thickness; it’s hard to read from the signature on the stringer, which you can see below and to the right.) It was shaped in 2017, which is clearly dated on the stringer.
The board’s owner took some great photographs of this stunning board.
Many thanks to the anonymous collector who was kind enough to share the photos of this gorgeous Steve Lis fish. As always, if you have one of your own, vintage or otherwise, I’d love to see pics. Drop me a line via email or DM me on Instagram — I respond to all my messages.
