Wave Tools & Schroff: 80s Price Checks

Greetings, Shredderz! Today we’ve got a quick recap of an eventful weekend in Eighties surfboard sales. This Price Checks entry covers what looked to be an eventful weekend in Eighties surfboard sales, including two different Wave Tools boards, and a Schroff Quad Blaster. (Check out this post from earlier this year for some more cool Echo Beach sticks.) Keep scrolling for some more details.

Wave Tools Quad X (eBay): $N/A

Pictured above is a bitchin’ Wave Tools Quad X model. It is apparently all original. While the board clearly needs some work here and there, overall it’s in good condition, and the graphics still pop. The dimensions were listed at 6’0″ x 20″ x 2 7/8″. The seller guesses the Wave Tools Quad X might have been shaped in 1983, but I don’t have any reliable way of dating these boards. I guess the fin boxes are there in case you want to ride the board as a twin, and not a quad? The initial bid price was $595, which does not include shipping from Hawaii. I’m a little surprised no one bit at this price, especially considering the awesome graphics.

Wave Tools Thruster (Craigslist LA): $175

The Wave Tools thruster above was listed at $175, which I thought was a bit of a deal, even when considering the board was nowhere in perfect condition. According to the seller, the board is 5’8″ x 2 3/4″ x 20 3/4″, and it sounds like a bunch of the details on the board were custom ordered, like the rails, the rocker, and the pushed back wide point. As a low performance surfer myself I won’t pretend to have any insight into how this board rides but it sounds like it was made for someone who knew what they were doing. The Craigslist post disappeared shortly after it was up, so I’m guessing the Wave Tools thruster went pretty quick at $175, even with a small delam patch in the tail.

Schroff Quad Blaster (Craigslist San Diego): $80

I still don’t have a good explanation for how this board went for under $100. For what it’s worth, $80 was the price listed, but it could have conceivably changed when the board was sold. There are some blemishes on this one, including some nastiness around one of the glass on fins and a some repairs that need some re-dos, but overall I’m still a bit blown away at the price. I’m ruling out the possibility it was a typo as the original listing said “asking $80 firm.” Dims are 5’10” x 20 3/4″ x 2 1/2″.
