Greetings, Shredderz! Given that we’ve just seen some truly epic swells in the North Pacific, I can’t think of a better Sagas of Shred entry than one that features the opening ceremony for the famed Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational.

Pictured here are Tom Carroll, Aaron Napolean and Darrick Doerner. The Quiksilver ad originally ran in a 1989 issue of Surfer Magazine. I love how the photo expresses the seriousness of big wave surfing and the honor that comes with being invited to compete in the Eddie. I write a lot about ads that make me chuckle or seem kind of silly in some ways, but to me, this one captures a very cool part of surfing culture.
