Trunks Talk: Kanvas by Katin

Greetings, Shredderz! For today’s Sagas of Shred entry we’ve got another classic ad from the folks over at Katin. The venerable got its start making canvas boat covers in 1954 before switching to produce boardshorts as surfing exploded in popularity throughout Southern California. Katin has run memorable ads over the years, especially those featuring matriarch Nancy Katin, who, despite having fallen by chance into the surf industry, seemed thrilled to be a part of it. I’ll never get sick of the ads featuring Nancy Katin grinning as she poses alongside her less put together looking team riders.

The ad above, which I found on the Surfing Walk of Fame’s website, is interesting in that it features a lineup of Florida all stars: Claude Codgen, Yancy Spencer and Greg Loehr, to name just a few. I was surprised to see this given Katin’s history as a Southern California staple. I’m not familiar with the other names in the ad, but that speaks more to my unfamiliarity with the rich history of Florida’s surf scene than anything else. No clue who shaped the sting they’re checking out, but it looks like a rad one.

Thanks for reading and we’ll be back next Thursday with more Sagas of Shred!
