Greetings, Shredderz! Usually the Sagas of Shred series features a different vintage surf ad every Thursday evening. Technically speaking, today’s entry isn’t an ad, per se, but I think it’s a wonderful piece of art from surf history.
Pictured here is a movie poster for “Free and Easy”, a MacGillivray / Freeman movie first released in 1967, making it one of their earliest films. From their start making surf movies, the duo have gone on to much bigger things, racking up over a billion dollars in ticket sales and two Academy Award nominations along the way. I actually haven’t seen “Free and Easy” myself, but I think the poster is a stunning piece of graphic design, and one can’t tell the history of surf films without mentioning Greg MacGillivray and Jim Freeman early on. I got the image via Surf Classics, which has a great archive of vintage surf movie posters that’s definitely worth checking out.
