Croteau, Hynson & More: Mid Week Grab Bag

Greetings, Shredderz! Apologies that things have been a bit more quiet lately on the blog front. Believe it or not, writing about surfboards isn’t exactly a lucrative line of work, so I’ve had to focus on things that actually pay the bills. But fear not, we’ve got a sweet selection of sleds that are currently for sale online, representing a cool cross section of craftsmen. Keep reading for more:

Mike Croteau Big Wave Gun (Craigslist San Diego)

Longtime readers might recall that I’ve covered Mike Zeh-Croteau’s shapes a couple of times. He’s not a household name, even for surfboard nerds, but I’m fascinated with his career and the boards he’s made. (Check out these two insane Croteau 70s single fins. Here’s a 9’7″ big wave gun with a 2+1 fin setup. Check out those rocker shots. According to the seller, the board was shaped at the old Haleiwa Sugar Mill on the North Shore.

8’4″ Lance Carson Hull (Craigslist Los Angeles)

Based off what I see on Lance Carson’s site, the board above is his Speed Stick hull model. Not sure when it was shaped but it’s a neat one. Note this one is only up for trade.

Mike Hynson Balsa Red Fin (Craigslist San Diego)

This seller is actually selling two Mike Hynson balsa boards, and well, they don’t come cheap. I won’t pretend like I know the first thing about Hynson’s balsa shapes. The board pictured above has a Gordon & Smith logo on the deck — maybe this was before Hynson started making boards under his own name? What I do know is that the red fin is a certified surfing classic, and I love the matching stripe in the tail, which I’m guessing is part of the tail block.
