Greetings, Shredderz! For those who aren’t familiar, every Thursday evening I post a vintage surf ad as part of the Sagas of Shred series. One of my favorite sub-genres of vintage surf ads are the movie posters that accompanied a number of 60s surf films. Here’s a poster for Grant Rohloff’s 1961 film “Out of Control”. The 60s surf film posters tend to be pretty simple, but I think the minimalist designs have stood the test of time. I love the little details you find in these things: for example, you’ll see that a lot of these flyers advertise showings in high school auditoriums. And while these posters are clearly products of a very different time — what would they think of Instagram, one wonders — the stoke of surfing, the magic of seeing someone riding a wave on a screen, well, that hasn’t changed one bit, and I hope it never will.
