Al Merrick Hand Shape Single Fin Gun + More

Greetings, Shredderz! The Weekend Grab Bag is back with some choice selections from Craigslist and other places where fine surfboards are sold. There are some rad sticks up for grabs, including a very cool Channel Islands single fin and more. More details below:

7’4″ Channel Islands Al Merrick Hand Shape Single Fin Gun (Craigslist Orange County)

I’m always on the hunt for examples of Al Merrick hand shapes, and this one is pretty cool. The dims are 7’4″ x 12 1/2″ x 19 1/8″ x 11 1/2″ x 2 7/8″. It’s got Al’s signature on the stringer, so it’s almost certainly hand shaped by the man himself. The listing says it’s a 70s board but maybe even early 80s, too? For more on how to identify Al Merrick hand shapes check out this blog post I wrote up a few years back. Seller is asking $700, which I think is a very reasonable price for a board from the man who is undoubtedly one of the most influential shapers in history.

9’0″ 1960s O’Neill Pintail Longboard (Carlsbad)

I dig these 60s O’Neill longboards, back from when the venerable wetsuit brand used to produce its own shapes. I’ve heard rumors over the years that Phil Edwards made some boards for O’Neill, but I’ve never managed to get a straight answer on the matter. This board is 9’0″ and I’m guessing it was shaped shortly before the Transition Era. Seller is asking $550. There’s one old repair near the nose, which is visible in the photos, and overall it seems like a solid price.

8’0″ Tom Parrish Single Fin (Craigslist SF)

I’ve always been fascinated by Tom Parrish and his boards. Parrish was an early and notable shaper for the legendary Lightning Bolt label, and he worked closely with Jeff Hakman, among others. I think nowadays Parrish shapes on Maui, and I’ve heard he periodically travels to Europe to make boards, too. This one was custom made for Ocean Beach’s crushing beach break, and damn, it just looks so clean. Personally you couldn’t force me to surf OB during the kinds of conditions that this board was intended for, so I’m stoked to admire it from afar. Seller is asking $1,200. For an insane Parrish Lightning Bolt single fin, check out this earlier post.
