Sixties Yater Spoon

Greetings, Shredderz! There’s a cool vintage Yater Spoon currently up for sale on Craigslist. You can find the listing here.

The board measures 9’10” x 23 1/2″ x 3 1/2″. According to the seller it was shaped in 1966 or 1967. I can’t verify the dates myself, as I don’t know this off the top of my head, but the board has a Wonderbolt fin, which should narrow down its age.

It was almost certainly shaped pre-Transition Era, and the board is still in decent shape. There’s a St Christopher pendant glassed into the deck, which might be a plus for you devout Catholics, though personally I would’ve preferred all original.

Based on the signature, I think it’s likely the board was shaped by someone other than Renny. Compare the numbering on the stringer with this 70s Yater single fin I wrote up a little while ago. The signature on the single fin has a “Y” and then four numbers laid out in a 2×2 grid, which is how Renny signed some of his boards. Yater employed production shapers like John Eichert since the early days of the label.

Anyway if you’re interested, check out the Craigslist post here.
