Early 80s Gordon & Smith Surfboards Ad

Greetings, Shredderz! In my humble opinion this is one of the cooler vintage surf ads I’ve run as part of the Sagas of Shred series, which I have been posting every Thursday here on this blog. There’s so much to unpack here, whether it’s poring over the minute details of every single insanely detailed airbrush, the Mark Richards twin fins that G&S produced under license, or the Skip Fryes that are just casually mentioned at the very bottom. What I really dig about the ad, though, is the fact it takes great pains to credit everyone whose hands touched these magnificent shapes. I won’t break out the individual roles, but according to this ad, the following seventeen people constituted G&S’ surfboard production roster: Hank Warner, Terry Goldsmith, Mike Richardson AKA Electric Duck, Skip Frye, John Holly, Hoy Runnels, Mike Maderazo, Gordon Arrendale III, Bryan Hughes, Bob Boeche, Kurt Boeche, Tom Curtiss, Charlie Douglas, Jose Cota, Tom Heggestad, Jim Ek, Ian Thompson, Mike Gallagher and Jack Cassidy. Shout out to Adrian Sclater, who first posted this ad.
