Becker Surf Ad

Greetings, Shredderz! Honestly, there isn’t anything particularly notable about this ad, but I thought it was as good a time as any to pay tribute to Phil Becker’s long and fruitful career. The dude shaped 100K+ surfboards by hand over the years, focused on functional shapes, with little regard for trends. I own more eggs / mid-lengths than I need, but every time I see one of Becker’s shapes pop up on Craigslist I am always tempted. I’m not even sure what’s going on in the ad — is that supposed to be a paper bag covering the dude’s head? — but the board peeking out of the shopping cart sure does look sick.

The Becker ad is a picture of “the White Lady”. She was a local homeless (maybe) lady who lived in the South Bay in the 70s and 80s. She always wore all white. She was arrested for catching and cooking one of the ducks in Pollywog Park, then I’m guessing institutionalized. She was a devout Christian and preached all the time.
