As an anonymous internet commenter once said about Arnold Schwarzenegger, “he’s not a great actor, but he’s an amazing movie star.” Strider Wasilewski is not my favorite sports commentator, but as far as surfing personalities go, few are more compelling than the Dogtown raised Pipe charger turned WSL fixture. Strider grew up in public housing in Santa Monica and somehow scratched and clawed his way to a dream career traveling the world and charging some of its most challenging waves. He’s got that dog in him, but he’s also incredibly likable. It’s a potent mixture.
Lastly, Quiksilver had such a great run in the late 90s. They were the clean cut jock counterpart to Volcom’s back of the class troublemaker — both were great, but for very different reasons. Quik’s wave and mountain logo is a classic piece of graphic design, and then the red and white coloring and the font were so on point, too.
