It feels a little strange to write a series called “Social Media Roundup”, when I myself am trying (and often failing) to avoid mindless scrolling in search of tiny morsels of digital dopamine. And as much as I want to complain about the algorithm and the Explore page’s truly breathtaking ability to destroy your brain cells, the fact is social media also serves up some truly great surf content. This is the last Social Media Roundup of 2023. I’ll be doing a longer year in review piece later in the week, so in the meantime, here are some recent standout posts.
Are we paying enough attention to Album Surf and the insane amount of talent on their roster? I’ve written about just about everything they’ve done recently, and I still can’t get enough Victor Bernardo footage. Whatever style is, and however you might define it, we can all agree that Bernardo has it, and then some.
Nat Young and perfect, huge Ocean Beach is a must watch, no questions asked. I lived in San Francisco for a while, and like a toxic ex, OB still holds a place in my heart, even though it dished out way more punishment than pleasure during our years together. And yet those high points are memorable indeed, though I would never dare to surf OB at even a fraction of the size of this most recent swell.
For more OB photos, check out Paul Ferraris’ post here. Ferraris is an ultra talented photographer, and I particularly enjoy his shots of OB, which is his home break.
No leash, no hesitation: Zack Howard surfs sizable Hawaii on a longboard with fearless aplomb.
Last but not least, here’s Andy Findlay on a Gato Heroi. Photo by PERO but I’m not sure who that is. As always, let me know if you have info!
