“Midlengthing” might not be an actual word, but the surfing in this edit is very much real. Katin just released four minutes and change of Devon Howard unleashing his unhurried yet critical approach on some unsuspecting waves. Howard is one of my favorite surfers to watch. It calls to mind a recent Instagram post from Joel Tudor, featuring Richard Harvey, with the caption “connection, not dissection.” I’d much rather watch Howard surf than just about a handful of the top people on tour. Maybe I’m just middle aged, who knows? But I love how his surfing works in concert with what the wave offers, as opposed to cramming as many maneuvers into a wave for the sake of it, or over-indexing on aggressive maneuvers that don’t necessarily complement the conditions.
